Ironing/Intermediate Techniques Encaustic Painting @ Spruill

Spruill Center for the Arts

Ironing as an encaustic wax painting technique results in a unique and beautiful experience for the artist and the viewer. Surfaces can be created to emulate coral-thick and textural; or thin layers of pigmented, natural, unbleached beeswax can be fused to watercolor paper or wood surfaces revealing subtle, transparent layers of color that seem to pulsate and move before the eyes of the beholder.

In this encaustic workshop, learn the method of ironing wax to develop what Penny calls, “Selfscapes,” representations of sky, sea, ground, or simple yet stunning abstract fields of luscious color. You will leave this workshop with several encaustic wax masterpieces on paper and wooden substrates. While moving gracefully with the flow of the molten wax under the hot iron, you may find yourself swimming within serene waves, floating amongst translucent clouds and experiencing a healing that is born from the freedom of creating abstract beauty without restriction.

NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED. Register here for $190 or save $20 with Spruill membership.

Materials are included in the Materials Kit Fee of $35 PAYABLE TO THE INSTRUCTOR at the time of the workshop. See www.spruillarts.org for information regarding the Materials Kit and a list of supplies you will need to bring to class.

Description
Photography can be transformed with the addition of natural beeswax. Enhance your photographs by distressing prints or by adding smooth or highly textured surfaces, depending on the content and concept of the image. Learn how layering, tearing or cutting your photo then reassembling, and applying washes can create a psychological depth to carefully chosen images. During a pre-workshop “image planning” session with the Penny via email or phone, your favorite photos, (whether copied/printed from a family album, or from your iPhone on the beach) will be curated with Penny Treese to plan out how the encaustic process may enhance each of your works’ visual narrative
