About Penny
Themes of stillness, presence and reflection are revealed throughout Penny Treese’s paintings, in both her figurative work and sea/landscapes. The interplay of molten unbleached beeswax and lustrous pigment creates images of land and sea, sea and sky, body and figure as field. Using an iron to apply heat and delicate pressure, Treese transforms meticulously manipulated wax and paint. The work occupies a space, fluid between landscape and portraiture, the body as field.

With encaustic painting, Penny discovered an unrestricted way of working leading her far beyond her traditional instruction in the arts. Penny is a fine artist, who creates unique commissioned pieces and exhibits her abstract and photo-encaustic works in several galleries nationwide. She has taught internationally and currently instructs private workshops at her home studio and teaches within Binder’s, Garage Door Studios, Spruill Center for the Arts and has taught within The Art School of Sandy Springs, Callanwolde, Red Deer College-Canada, and Michael David’s Fine Arts Workshop & Atelier.
She has accepted and won awards in juried exhibitions. Paintings hang in numerous galleries and private and public collections.

This event takes place at our Buckhead store.

“Creating Texture – Encaustic Painting Workshop”

  Instructor: Kim Stuart McGill
Time: 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Explore varied techniques such as scraping, accretion, layering, oil paint washes and more to create vibrant landscapes or abstract expressions. Will it be raised and edgy-smooth and glassy? NOV 23~SPRUILL: ENCAUSTIC IRONING ON WATERCOLOR PAPER

Spruill Center for the Arts Registration for Encaustic Workshops Open in Dunwoody, GA

Monday, November 23rd, 10AM – 4PM

Intstructor: Penny Treese

Ironing as an encaustic wax painting technique results in a unique and beautiful experience for the artist and the viewer. Surfaces can be created to emulate coral-thick and textural, or thin layers of pigmented, natural, unbleached beeswax can be fused to watercolor paper or wood surfaces revealing subtle, transparent layers of color that seem to pulsate and move before the eyes of the beholder. In this encaustic workshop, learn the method of ironing wax to develop what Penny calls, “Selfscapes,” representations of sky, sea, ground, or simple yet stunning abstract fields of luscious color. You will leave this workshop with several encaustic wax masterpieces on paper and wooden substrates. While moving gracefully with the flow of the molten wax under the hot iron, you may find yourself swimming within serene waves, floating amongst translucent clouds and experiencing a healing that is born from the freedom of creating abstract beauty without restriction.

NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED.
