Imagine proudly looking over your final encaustic wax painting created during this one day workshop led by local artist Penny Treese. Blooms and bursts of vibrant color result from the use of blowtorch techniques, layers of pigmented wax, and various sized wax dipped brushes. Learn to create delicate marks and even feather colors in layers to produce the final image.

Students first create savory color palettes by learning to combine appropriate proportions of oil pigment to wax. The class progresses from painting on small surfaces with focus on composition to later using large substrates where repetition of mark making and “sizing up” is the concentration. Students are encouraged to incorporate happy accidents, discovered during the small surface portion of class, into the final 18×18” painting.

Students will leave with one 18×18” painting along with smaller studies/masterpieces created during the one day workshop. This collection provides students with a foundation for a body of work that can be grown as it develops.

This is an intermediate to advanced level class. Suggested pre-requisites are An Intro to Encaustic workshop and an Advanced Encaustic workshop. See links below for upcoming pre-requisite class options. Contact Penny Treese with questions about requirements for this workshop.

Artblend Gallery and Magazine is now showcasing my works in Fort Lauderdale!!

“Themes of stillness, presence and reflection are revealed throughout Penny Treese’s paintings. The interplay of molten unbleached beeswax and vivid pigment beget images of land and sea, sea and sky. Using an iron to apply heat and delicate pressure, Treese transforms wax into warm waves of color flowing across wood or paper. Golds fade, blues burst, pinks evoke.”

NOV 23~SPRUILL: ENCAUSTIC IRONING ON WATERCOLOR PAPER

Spruill Center for the Arts Registration for Encaustic Workshops Open in Dunwoody, GA

Monday, November 23rd, 10AM – 4PM

Intstructor: Penny Treese

Ironing as an encaustic wax painting technique results in a unique and beautiful experience for the artist and the viewer. Surfaces can be created to emulate coral-thick and textural, or thin layers of pigmented, natural, unbleached beeswax can be fused to watercolor paper or wood surfaces revealing subtle, transparent layers of color that seem to pulsate and move before the eyes of the beholder. In this encaustic workshop, learn the method of ironing wax to develop what Penny calls, “Selfscapes,” representations of sky, sea, ground, or simple yet stunning abstract fields of luscious color. You will leave this workshop with several encaustic wax masterpieces on paper and wooden substrates. While moving gracefully with the flow of the molten wax under the hot iron, you may find yourself swimming within serene waves, floating amongst translucent clouds and experiencing a healing that is born from the freedom of creating abstract beauty without restriction.

NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED.
