TECHNIQUES IN PHOTO-ENCAUSTIC PAINTING by Penny Treese

Learn several of Penny’s unique techniques and secrets in manipulating images to create photo-encaustic paintings. Add texture to your photos by distressing with water, wine, found objects, steel wool, natural pigments and more. Explore printing and manipulating photos on translucent papers like mulberry, tissue, and other fine art papers. Photos printed on Japanese papers then saturated with natural beeswax and fused, create luminous results to enhance your work’s visual narrative. Learn how layering photos, tearing or cutting your photo then reassembling, and applying washes can create a psychological depth to your carefully chosen photographs. Class includes a pre-workshop “image planning” session with the Penny via email or phone. Penny will guide you through choosing the best photos for this medium and unique workshop.
NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED – Intro to Encaustic recommended.

SPRUILL ENCAUSTIC PAINTING: EXPLORING IRONING ON PAPER by Penny Treese

SPRUILL ENCAUSTIC PAINTING: EXPLORING IRONING ON PAPER by Penny Treese

Ironing as an encaustic painting technique results in a unique experience for the artist and the viewer. Surfaces can be created to emulate thick coral-like textures, thin translucent waves of color, and more. The natural beeswax can be fused to watercolor paper or wood surfaces revealing subtleties that seem to pulsate before the eyes of the beholder. In this encaustic workshop, you’ll learn methods of ironing wax to develop what Penny calls, “Selfscapes,” representations of sky, sea, ground, or simple yet stunning abstract fields of luscious color. You will leave this workshop with several masterpieces on various substrates. While moving gracefully with the flow of the molten wax under the hot iron, you may find yourself swimming within serene waves, floating amongst translucent clouds and experiencing a healing that is born from the freedom of creating abstract beauty without restriction. NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED.
