The new Parisian-inspired bistro and catering company, Ocean Market, across from Emory Midtown Hospital (formerly Crawford-Long), will be celebrating with a live encaustic artwork demonstration by Penny Treese on April 1st from 7-9 pm. Her beautiful works will also be on display and for sale. Chef Shane McIntosh will be providing complimentary hors-d’oeuvres and cocktails for the guests. Penny has won awards in a number of juried exhibitions, including, most recently, Best of Show at a competition at the Decatur Market & Gallery.
“Observing the way our culture treats aging as an evil to avoid, Treese’s technique begins with an out-of-focus photograph of a nude woman on thin paper. She distresses the image with water, wine, coffee, salt and cold—natural elements that age the human body. Finally, applying heat to layers of molten unbleached beeswax and vivid pigment, Treese creates a beauty and integrity from her “aged” work—ultimately answering the question “Are beauty and aging contradictions in terms” with an empathic and absolute No.
