CLASS > Encaustic Painting: Exploring Ironing on Paper at Spruill Center for the Arts
INSTRUCTOR: Penny Treese
OCT.10 @ 10:00 am – 3:00 pm
Ironing as an encaustic painting technique results in a unique experience for the artist and the viewer. Surfaces can be created to emulate thick coral-like textures, thin translucent waves of color, and more. The natural beeswax can be fused to watercolor paper or wood surfaces revealing subtleties that seem to pulsate before the eyes of the beholder. In this encaustic workshop, you’ll learn methods of ironing wax to develop what Penny calls, “Selfscapes,” representations of sky, sea, ground, or simple yet stunning abstract fields of luscious color. You will leave this workshop with several masterpieces on various substrates. While moving gracefully with the flow of the molten wax under the hot iron, you may find yourself swimming within serene waves, floating amongst translucent clouds and experiencing a healing that is born from the freedom of creating abstract beauty without restriction. NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED.
