Themes and Issues in Contemporary Encaustic: Authentic Visual Voices,  Catherine Nash

What do artists make their art about? What contemporary issues do artists address in their work? Gaining expertise in technique is only a first step. Our goal is to create truly innovative, authentic art that resonates with such things as our core beliefs, our curiosity or our emotional self.  With the emphasis on content rather than technique, this pertinent lecture will present international artists who push the boundaries of encaustic while addressing current trends in contemporary art.   Other artists…

We will begin our workshop by mixing wax with pigment and material safety and then progress into multiple techniques of layering, texturing and fusing. An exploration of photo encaustics and wax on paper will conclude the session (no photography experience necessary). See why this medium is gaining popularity quickly as you discover the freedom and forgiveness of painting with wax! This encaustic painting workshop is appropriate for beginners as well as more experienced

Students. 5 day class. 9-4pm daily – $572.25

This workshop will display variety of ways your images can included with encaustic using several collage techniques and even learning to pour wax onto your work instead of using a brush. You’ll also learn to transfer images directly on to the wax for a beautifully rustic effect. You’ll use a heat gun, a tacking iron and a propane torch to fuse your wax depending on the requirements of each technique.

Today, we introduce you to Penny Treese, an artist who uses a fascinating technique called encaustic painting. Welcome, Penny!

Where did you grow up? If not Atlanta, what brought you here?

I grew up in a rural town called Mahomet (population 2,000) in central Illinois just outside Champagne. I played in the forest in my back yard and the cornfields in my front yard. An ideal childhood for a budding artist with a huge imagination. In 1992, after graduating Cum Laude from Illinois State University with an art and design degree, I moved to Atlanta to start a career as a graphic designer and art director. Over the next decade and a half, I worked at most of the successful agencies as a high-end graphic designer and art director…..READ MORE
